Biology / Honors Biology

Course Description:

Biology I is a course designed to introduce the student to a variety of core concepts demonstrating the complexity and diversity of life.  Students will engage in a wide variety of experiences including traditional laboratory activities, Internet research, on-line virtual laboratory activities, on-line tutorials with self-assessment quizzes, and cooperative learning activities.  The purpose of this curriculum guide is to provide a framework for the scope, order and pacing of these core concepts.

Biology I is a course that introduces students to the world of living things. The students explore the basic life processes at the molecular, cellular, systemic, organismal, and ecological levels of organization within the biosphere.  Students will explore the interdependence and interactions within the environment to include relationships, behavior, and population dynamics.  They will also build relationships between the cultural and historical scientific contributions of men and women which will support the evidence that supports biological evolution and current and emerging technology applications.

Classroom Rules:

  1. Arrive to class on time.
  2. Bring all materials to class each day.
  3. Visits to the restroom and water breaks need to be done between classes.
  4. Treat peers and staff with respect
  5. Raise your hand and obtain permission from the teacher before talking or getting out of seat.
  6. Must keep cell phone turned off and kept in assigned locker. SCS Policy 6207.

Classroom Procedures:

  1.  Enter the classroom in an orderly manner.
  2.  Sharpen pencils before the tardy bell.
  3.  Begin working on bellwork.
  4.  Label papers as follows: Name, Date, Class Period
  5.   Sit quietly and wait for the teacher to begin the lesson.
  6.  Dispose of trash at the end of class.

Consequences for Negative Behavior:

  1. 1st Offense – Warning
  2.  2nd Offense – Contact parents
  3.  3rd Offense – Conference
  4.  4th Offense – Office Referral

Conduct Grading:

  • E (Excellent) – 0 offenses
  • S (Satisfactory) – 1-3 offenses
  • N (Needs Improvement) – 4-6 offenses
  • U (Unsatisfactory) – 7 offenses
